Description
A rare CD indeed, Rabtu Gawa is a wonderfully cohesive compilation that most of us likely lack in our collection. Kunal gives us a chance to hear many of the tracks on the disc by assembling seven of nine of them together with a few other old-school gems, creating a truly inspired mix that itself shines brilliantly. In Kunal’s own words, “This one is the REAL deal folks, true to the spirit and vibe that remains the foundation for goatrance !!“

I remember quite vividly Darshan’s Awakening album release. I was already a Darshan fan due to tracks like Windchime and Ephemeral, but when this album was unleashed upon the psychedelic trance underground, I gained a new respect for the Grant Collins/Mark Robinson duo that had assembled such an emotive, cohesive piece of music. It was melodic, sure, but it was dark, driving, and full of an incredible pulsating psychedelic energy.

Compiled and mixed by AztroNaut in the spring of 2000 using 2 Pioneer CDJs, here are two Darshan single-artist mixes sure to please the old-school Goa trance fan.

AztroNaut gives us a some insight into himself and these mixes:

I am now 40 years old and have loved Goa trance since ’98. I also love progressive house and death metal + some rock. I’ve done artist mixes and other concept mixes for 13 years, and still counting. I haven’t been spinning “officially” for the last decade due to various reasons, but I’m happy to carry on  at home.

Darshan was a project I fell in love with in ’98 and once I started DJing, I had a desire to mix my favourite tracks from them.  Not that many tracks were licensed back then, so in order to fully dig Darshan I had to collect all tracks on minidisc, and the idea of a mix was born. This was my third artist mix recorded to minidisc. These types of mixes with only one artist weren’t something I could flag high since most people care to hear different [artists in a mix]. Therefore, along with others, this was stored on MD which only recently have been revisited. Nothing but volume adjustments have been done with the mixes as I feel they still are as good as I could possibly make them (the only transition I’m not satisfied with is Duck & Black Magic).

I’ve recorded more artist mixes than anything else, and I’m happy to do them since not that many choose the same. The challenge is at least on a level with mixes of unlimited choices; artist mixes have a very limited amount of tracks and possibilities from which to pick – it still has to sound natural and carry a nice flow.

Here we depart from the gooey Goa trance sound of 1996 and move forward to the turn of the millennium, when the old-timers had tired of the gated melodic layers and were embracing the space between the sounds. Encouraging the mind to fill the gaps, this mix shows how some of the founding members of the Goa trance sound were exploring more minimal soundscapes in the genre later referred to as “progressive psy.” Whether “progressive” as a moniker is apt or not, this is one mix that’ll get the booty movin’ at any time of the day or night.

I remember doing this on a very hot, stoned, summer’s afternoon around 2001. The result, a mix I have always been pleased with.
These are all vinyl releases from Flying Rhino, who were at this time really taking huge steps forward with this new-found vibe and energy. A definitive move away from acidic Goa trance, but still, unmistakably from the same stables.

That’s right, folks, only three weeks until the second installment of the Global Goa Party kicks off. I have received sets from two of the DJs so far, and the rest are all hard at work putting theirs together for submission by the 19 March deadline.

Come March 24th, the global village will be groovin’ to 15 hours of old-school Goa (and other?) trance by 10 DJs from all over our little planet. Announcing the official lineup and the DI.fm Goa/Psy channel broadcast times is this beautiful flyer from Lara (whom you may know as the artist that did the CD art for Mind Rewind).

My friends, it is time once again to bring together the global tribe for a planet-wide, all-night, all-out celebration of the retro-fluoro trance-dance experience. The first Global Goa Party was an absolute blast, and I hope this one will be even more fun for everyone.

Global Goa Party 2: March 24, 2012

The idea for the Global Goa Party series is to create the soundtrack for a full night (and morning) of old-school Goa trance by ten DJs from all over the world.

The year is 1996. Each DJ will create and submit a mix appropriate for the year and their time slot, and at the end of the submission window (January 24 through March 19, 2012) all of the mixes will be posted here at the Goat Ranch. In addition, I’ll stitch them together to create a single-file download for uninterrupted listening of the whole party. Then, simply invite some friends over on a Saturday night, hang some fluoro tapestries in your living room, fire up the black lights, press play at around 8PM and enjoy the party!

I’ve also been in contact with the good fellas over at DI.fm and they are once again going to be streaming the whole party on the Goa/Psy channel over there. Yay! More info on that later…

How to participate

1. Pick your desired slot from the Set Times below and send me an email requesting your time slot.
   • Time slots are available on a first-come-first-served basis.
   • I’ll update the list with assigned DJs as the sign-ups arrive.
2. Read the Global Goa Party Set Guidelines below
3. Record a killer old-school Goa set and send a link to marsh [at] goatranch [dot] com - it’s as simple as that!

Set Guidelines

I’m not out to stifle anyone’s creativity, but there are some “rules” that come along with participating in Global Goa Party 2.

• Deadline for mix submissions: March 19, 2012
• The year of this global virtual party is 1996, thus you should include tracks appropriate for that time period.
• Please create a set appropriate for your selected time slot. If sign up for the 2AM-3:30AM slot, you’d better be playing some heavy duty, intense stuff. Conversely, if you pick the 8PM-9:30PM slot, you probably should be thinking of easing people into the night with something fairly mellow. Common sense, I know, but had to say it.
• Include a tracklist with your set. Track lists will be posted a couple of weeks after the posting of the mixes, sometime after March 24th. You don’t have a track list when your groovin’ at a party, so listen, enjoy the moment, and then come back later for the track lists.
• If you sign up for a time slot, please submit a mix by the deadline. I’d hate to reserve your slot only to hit the deadline without a mix from you.
• If you sign up and find at some point that you won’t be able to make the deadline, let me know so I can open up the slot to another DJ.

Flyer Art

I really, really would love to have someone create some killer retro flyer art for this thing. As you can see, my GIMP skills fairly laughable. If you’d like to do a flyer for the party, please do so! I post quite often about the party during the lead-up to the event here on the Ranch and also on various forums and Facebook and whatnot, so if I get more than one flyer, I use them all (sometimes more than once). One of them will also be used for the posting on DI.fm, so that’s pretty cool too. Send me an email to let me know you’re working on something, I’d love to hear from ya.

Basically a highly subjective interpretation of the evolution of the early 90′s Goa sound. The tracks are from 1989-1995, so most of them come from an era when the term “Goa trance” didn’t exist.

Every once in awhile someone will post a mix somewhere that has that something that makes it shinier than the rest of the rocks in the box. This is one of those mixes. kk originally posted this on Discogs over two years ago, but it deserves wider distribution than to the scant few of us Goa geeks who hang out in the Goa/Psy-trance forum. It really struck a chord with me, and is a wonderful bit of a history lesson for anyone into the Goa trance sound who wasn’t around in the “olden days.”

Myself:

Music nut, vinyl freak and very occasional DJ. Based in Oslo, lived here all my life. The bulk of the collection consists of techno and ambient/IDM, but there’s a little bit of everything in there. Not a hardcore Goa fanatic, but have a soft spot for oldskool.

The mix:

Basically a highly subjective interpretation of the evolution of the early 90′s Goa sound. The tracks are from 1989-1995, so most of them come from an era when the term “Goa trance” didn’t exist. I’m no authority on this subject, I’ve never been to Goa and have no idea if all of these tracks were actually played there, but they definitely could have been… The purpose of this mix is to track the lineage from the industrial- and EBM-inspired techno sound of Germany and Belgium in the late 80′s/early 90′s to the earliest incarnations of Goa trance. One could also say that I’ve simply thrown together a few records that I happen to like. Whatever perspective you prefer, hope you enjoy it!

My perspective is that this is a great sampling of what is often termed proto-Goa, and with the tightly mixed yet quick-transition “DAT-style” mixing, I must say this mix freakin’ nails it. I have no doubt every one of these tracks echoed down the beach, numerous times.
